Beginning on November 3, 2017, Canadian air carrier WestJet will begin flying to the Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City (BZE) from its hub in Calgary, Alberta (YYC). This will mark the first time that any airline in Canada has offered a direct flight to Belize from Alberta.

Founded in 1996, WestJet is the leading low-cost airline in Canada, second in size to Air Canada, the country’s national flag carrier. WestJet became the first Canadian airline to fly non-stop to Belize beginning in October 2016 with a new route that connected Toronto’s Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to the Belize City Airport.

Following a successful winter 2016/17 season, Air Canada announced that it too would be offering a non-stop flight from Toronto to Belize set to begin on December 15, 2017. Currently, approximately 7% of all international visitors to Belize hail from Canada, and it is expected that the number of Canadian tourists will increase once the new flights to Belize begin operating.

As a former British colony, Belize is the only nation in Central America where English is the official language. Thanks to its location just south of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Belize enjoys year-round sunshine and balmy weather, making it an attractive getaway destination for people in Canada. Belize is a relatively small country, approximately the same size as the Vermont in the United States, but has a very small population. The principal attractions in Belize are the untouched beauty of its rainforests and jungles as well as the world-class snorkeling, diving, and fishing available on its offshore reef, the second-largest in the world.

Belize has experienced double-digit increases in tourist numbers over the past few years thanks to new non-stop flights and the country’s growing reputation as a great destination for honeymooners, family vacations, and adventure travelers. Popular activities in Belize include zip lining in the jungle, exploring ancient Maya sites, relaxing on the beach, hiking through a national park, picnicking underneath a waterfall, and enjoying fabulous food such as fresh-caught seafood and organic produce. Visitors can also tour an animal sanctuary, learn more about the many different cultures in Belize, and partake in street parades during one of the country’s many holidays.

Once in Belize, the best way to explore the natural beauty of the country is with your own rental vehicle. Tour Belize Auto Rentals is the go-to Belize Car Rental Company and has two convenient locations, one in downtown Belize City and one at the international terminal of the Philip Goldson Airport.
