Getting to Belize
Just a decade ago, getting to Belize involved changing planes and lengthy layovers. Today, it is much easier to get to Belize as all four of the largest airlines in the United States have non-stop flights from major cities.
Flying to Belize
All international flights into Belize land at the Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) located in Ladyville, approximately nine miles north of Belize City.
From the United States and Canada, it takes approximately 2-5 hours to arrive in Belize.
There are non-stop flights to Belize from the following cities in North America:
- Calgary, Alberta
- Charlotte, North Carolina
- Dallas-Ft. Worth
- Los Angeles
- Toronto, Ontario
There are also non-stop flights to Belize from the following cities in Central America. Flight times are two hours or less.
- Cancun, Mexico
- Flores, Guatemala
- Guatemala City, Guatemala
- Merida, Mexico
- Panama City, Panama
- Roaton, Honduras
- San Pedro Sula, Honduras
- San Salvador, El Salvador
Belizean air carriers Maya Island Air and Tropic Air provide onward connections to more than a dozen destinations in Belize.
Overland to Belize
From Guatemala, there is only a single land crossing. The Guatemalan border town of Melchor de Mencos connects to the Belizean town of Benque Viejo in western Cayo District. This border crossing is open to buses, motorcycles, and privately owned vehicles.
There is a regular bus service from Guatemala City to Flores and onto Belize operated by Linea Dorada.
From Mexico, there is a border crossing from the town of Chetumal into Corozal District in the north of Belize onward to Belize City. There is a regular bus service from Cancun and other locations in the Yucatan Peninsula provided by Ado.
By Boat to Belize
There are two regular water taxi services into Belize. One is from eastern Guatemala and the other is from Chetumal, Mexico.
The water taxi service from Guatemala is a daily ferry leaving Livingston, Guatemala that travels to Punta Gorda in Belize’s southern Toledo District.
The water taxi from Chetumal, Mexico is also a daily ferry leaving Chetumal to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, two of Belize’s most famous Islands.
