Indulge your dark side, your bittersweet side and your milk chocolate side at the Belize Chocolate Festival. If you love food, history and fun, you don’t want to miss this three-day party.

Did you know that Belize is famous for its cacao? Most people think of coconuts, hot sauce, spices and rum when they think of Belize’s best-known agricultural products. Belize has been making quality, handcrafted chocolate products ever since the ancient Maya tended their first cacao crops here.

Explore a Proud Heritage

Belize-grown cacao has long been prized by chocolate aficionados all over the world. Chocolate makers from Belize have won international awards for their artisanal chocolate made from locally-grown cacao.

Much of the cacao that these chocolate makers use comes from Belize’s rural Toledo District. In 2007, farmers in the district decided that it was time to celebrate their work growing the world’s best cacao beans.

Since then, the Belize Chocolate Festival has been a favorite attraction every year. This year, it will be held from Sunday, May 24 through Monday, May 26 in Punta Gorda.

Get a Taste of History

During the Chocolate Festival, nonstop music, live acts, cooking demonstrations and a huge street market all pay tribute to chocolate’s important role in Belize’s heritage.

Sample unique, delicious Maya chocolate tea, a wonderful combination of hot spices and melted chocolate. Try traditional Mexican-style hot chocolate, meats cooked in chocolate and more. Local breweries show off their best chocolate stouts. Indulge in chocolate wine, chocolate soap and chocolate used in an amazing array of products.

Top off your visit by touring the cacao plantations that produce all this chocolate abundance. During the festival, the owners open up their farms for fascinating agricultural tours.
